In late 2011, I did my first cake for my brother's birthday - it was an Angry Birds themed cake as a practice run for my husband's birthday cake. Before long, I was hooked and took a few foundation cake decorating lessons to learn basic techniques.
In my humble opinion, structure and execution is key because if your cake is unstable and your finish is messy, it will affect the overall look of your cake.
Since my first cake, my cake creations have evolved and I consider myself very much a cake hobbyist as I have substantially limited my weekly cake production to keep the caking experience enjoyable and also to have time to carefully think about each design and really see each creation as a form of art (lord only knows how many hours I have spent making cake and I'm sure that many of you can relate to that!)
If I had to give any advice to anyone about cake decorating, it would be to take a few foundation lessons and the truth is, no matter how good we think we are, you never stop learning in the cake world but on the same token, you really are only limited by your own imagination!
Be brave, be bold and stay true to yourself. Don't worry about what everybody else is doing and dream big!
