I have chosen a children’s book with a significant spot in my heart and memories. Santa Mouse is a lonely little guy who’s only friends are in his imagination. He does not have a lot, but on Christmas Eve he has an epiphany and gives up his most prized possession to Santa Claus. Little did he know what great reward this one small gesture of generosity and selflessness would bring to him. I remember my Mom reading this book to me when I was very small. I would request this story as a regular in my rotation of favourites, and could recite it by memory before I started school. It was a regular telling every year as we decorated the tree, and the four of us would compete for the honour of hanging our Santa Mouse on the tree. When I had children of my own the book was out of print, but we continued the Santa Mouse storytelling and had our own mouse to hang in our tree. I told the story to 10 years of Beaver Scouts, and 2 years of Tiger Scouts when we were living in Oklahoma, USA. When my granddaughters came along I was on a mission to find at least one copy of the book, and found it had been actually back in print for a limited time! I bought three copies: one each for myself, my daughter and my son. I am thrilled that my granddaughters also have a Mouse in their Christmas tree, and the book is read every year in their home.
