Few people will get this. For over 13 years my husband commercial fished here on Hatteras Island. I raised my 2 children on a commercial fishermen’s salary. It was so tough that at one point financially, we almost lost our home. We sold the boat, my husband went back to school and is now a law enforcement officer. I got a job at the local school as a teacher’s assistant in a special education classroom.
Long story longer, Recently, a young woman asked me to make her wedding cake. Her boyfriend is a commercial fisherman and the only thing she asked for on her cake was a pair of fishing boots, and starfish.
I think this is one of the most unselfish acts I have ever seen. Here is a young woman, about to get married, ordering her wedding cake with only her fiance in mind. The young couple have a two-year-old little boy together and today in
front of friends and family, they said their vows in the front yard of their home. So Humbling. They need a sign in the yard that says, “Love Grows Here”.
My husband knows the couple and the young man grew up with our son.
In the end, my husband and I decided to ‘gift’ the couple their wedding cake.
I am thankful that the Lord has blessed my business that I am able to gift a wedding cake when the mood seems right.
The top tier has a pair of commercial fishing boots on it with flip flops for the bride and a tiny pair for the baby. The base tier of the cake has been piped as requested to look like a commercial fishing net. The orange basket is very familiar on Hatteras Island. It is a basket which holds fish. The cake is very small. It is an 8", 6", 4" all vanilla cake with buttercream icing and white chocolate seashells and fondant accents. Thanks for looking!
Psalm 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.
Beautiful cake and an even more beautiful gesture.
