I am so honored and thrilled to organize this Vesak Festival cake collaboration with 42 amazing Sugar Artists from around the world. Been born in the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, Vesak is one of the biggest days of the year in the Buddhist calendar and is celebrated by Buddhists all over the world. During this time, people celebrate the triple anniversary of Lord Buddha – his birth, his attaining of Enlightenment and his passing away into Nirvana. Also known as the Buddhist Festival of Light, colorful bamboo framed lanterns adorn the interior of every home and incredible luminous displays decorate the streets of most towns.

I designed my cake using various symbols of Buddhism. My main inspiration was the Lotus flower. The Lotus flower represents enlightenment as it raises and blooms above the murk to achieve enlightenment. The purple Lotus that I choose also speaks of spirituality and mysticism. The treasure vase (punkalasa) that holds the lotus flower is another symbol of Buddhism and this represents my Sri Lankan heritage. Finally, the wine that emerges from the vase that is covered with lotus buds is holding the lighted lantern (Vesak Koodu) which represents the path to enlightenment the celebration of Vesak.

The vase and the base is made with cake and the hanging Vesak Lantern is constructed with gumpaste. Colored gelatin sheets were used to decorate the inside of the lantern so when lighted the multi colors illuminates through it. Wafer paper was used to make the streamers of the lantern and all the lotus flowers were made using gumpaste. I had a wonderful time designing this cake as well as putting the collaboration together and hope you enjoy seeing all our cakes from the collaboration too.
