A Happy Chinese New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai to those celebrating the Year of the Goat!
And I definitely celebrated it with this cake to “Huat Ah!” (Expression in Hokkien to prosper). I brought this cake to my aunt’s home yesterday, and to celebrate a friend’s birthday that was coming very soon.
The cake design was pitched to me by my brother, and I took off with it. What I’m most proud of is the detail on the side of the gold ingot (or sycee as it’s called according to Wikipedia) – the dragons were fondant cutouts from a picture that I grabbed off the Internet, and the detail on them were made with fondant and piped royal icing. It definitely gave a huge boost of authenticity and grandeur to this cake that weighed a tonne!
The top of the ingot had Chinese characters which were pressured piped on as well. So if you ask me, I would have thought the cake was the real deal! (I’d be rich. Like, so rich!)
