2014 Sugar Skulls Collaboration - La Calavera Catrina

I was very honoured to be part of the 2014 Sugar Skulls Collaboration.

I drew my inspiration from the elegant La Calavera Catrina and the beautiful Day of the Dead alters.

The skull is crafted from white chocolate. It is adorned with gum paste Baby’s Breath flowers on parts of the skull to symbolise purity and innocence.

On the alter the gum paste flowers included are:
• Marigolds symbolising death
• Gladiolus symbolising remembrance and faithfulness
• Various shades of deep red cockscomb symbolising the blood of Christ

Her elegant hat is made from sugar lace to create an ethereal effect. The Papel Picado is made from hand painted wafer paper.
