Wilton castle

Forum: Cake Decorating Tools, Gadgets & Supplies

Hi all!! I’ve always asked myself this question, hope to have an answer: If a client asks for a castle, and you decide to use the plastic turrets of Wilton, do you tell the client: Please can i have them back? I’m ashamed to do that, what do you do? Thank you:)

How about you tell them that they are on loan or rental
and that when they are done they are to be brought back?
You could explain it to them beforehand so they know that they
can’t keep them lol,hope I’ve helped xx

Renting the is a good option. Or you could make your own from gum paste. Use a paper towel tube as a mold.

If you don’t want to rent, or ask for them back add the cost of the turrets to their cake price and let them keep them.

I have found that it was easier to just include the cost of the materials into the cake. It always seemed that if I really needed the pieces for another cake that’s when the client didn’t return it.

I got the idea from Peggy does cake… And it is along the lines of what cakealicious77 said. I use a metal cake support system in my tiered cakes. So I put on my quotes a $30 refundable fee. This fee needs to be a separate check and if I get my plate back in 2 weeks I will send the check back. If not I will cash the check.

Thank you all for your answers, you’ve been very helpful, I think i’ll tell the client to put a deposit and then give it back after returning the towers, thanks again for you all:))

I would simply tell client up front and request a deposit for the cost of the Wilton set. That’s what cake designers do when they rent those elaborate cake bases for their wedding cakes.

Client should understand and if they don’t – I’m not sure you want them as a client.

hehe! thank you so much funfetti! Honestly even if the client find my price expensive when it comes to the cake itself, I don’t care, I just tell them this my price, and i stick to it, people don’t appreciate that you spend days decorating a cake that can be eaten in 5 mns!!

You know it – I also love it when a family member tells you they “volunteered” to bring a cake and they were hoping you’d make it for them – at a special price, of course! Reallly??? For some reason, that always seems to happen to me… I suppose that’s part of being a cake designer! :))))
