CakesDecor Review: Classic Fabric Flowers in Sugar by Gary Chapman

I am so pleased to have been given this opportunity to review this Classic Fabric Flowers in Sugar book written by Gary Chapman because as a cake decorator we are not always asked to do a cake that has a budget in it for sugar flowers. This book gives us the option to still give the customer a beautiful cake with flowers, without all that cost. Making the flowers in this book is a win-win for both client and decorator!

“Classic Fabric Flowers in Sugar” has simple step by step instructions, both written and pictured so nothing is left out. It is very easy to follow and would be suitable for any person of any level to follow. Gary shows many different ways to change them up and add that little bit of extra flair for those who might want something a little more eye catching.

With a great glossary of 33 different techniques within 106 pages. Here are names of just a few you will find and love to re-create….

  • Simple rolled rose
  • The hybrid Rose
  • The Large Cabachon Rose
  • The simple blossom
  • Double sided and textured Blossom
  • The Exotic Rosette Flower
  • The Poinsettia
  • Mistletoe
  • The Christmas Rose
  • The simple Stitch Folded Leaf
  • The Double Sided Rolled Edge Leaf
  • The Seamed Puffed Leaf

So, I put Gary’s book to the test and decided I would try to make a quick cake using his book and would that even be possible. I took a couple of pre-covered tiers I already had on hand and in just a matter of an hour or so I had a gorgeous cake that any customer would be more than satisfied with. I will say for my first time I still have a few things to perfect but over all I was pretty happy with it.

I did try the ‘Pointed Petalled Fantasy Flower’ which I tried using the two–toned technique on but I did have a little more trouble with it and decided to leave it off. I need a bit more practice on that one. And that is really it I think, I believe with just a little bit of practice you could perfect most of Gary’s flowers very well and be able to create stunning cakes with ease.

I am happy to say I will be keeping this book handy and plan on using it over and over again. I am not one that always finds things easy to follow but this was simply perfect for me and especially seeing as I am a very visual learner. It was pictured perfectly and I feel addresses all the points that one would ask if having problems.

Verdict on this one is…it is an absolute keeper and a must have for anyone who would like to learn how to make these gorgeous fabric flowers and with ease. You will be popping out eye catching cakes that people will be raving over…creating breathtaking wedding cakes without having to have a high end budget bride!

Fabulous technique… Thanks so much for the review Sharon… Gorgeous!!!

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

I, like you Sharon, am a visual learner. And since I enjoy making fun and different types of flowers, like coffee filter flowers, this book is right up my alley. Thanks for the review….your cake really pops… 👍

Just checked 3 book sites, and can’t find a “hard cover”, only downloadable for Kindle. Which I don’t have. Can this be purchased as a soft/hard cover book???

Thanks for the link Lou. But I checked that Amazon link, it too only sells the downloadable Kindle version. If anyone wants a hard or soft cover, it’s available from the publisher in the UK. 👍
