Background Ideas for Cake Photos

In the past, I’ve struggled with taking pictures of my cakes with nice backgrounds. Most of them end up with a background I didn’t like, (chairs, couches, windows) or just a plain wall. So, I decided to improvise on a shoe-string budget… and this is what I’m doing now with very good results.

I purchased a large, black tri-fold cardboard (the one used for science projects – I got mine at Michael’s) ; purchased scrapbook sheets (12 × 12) of different themes – balloons, chevron patterns, clocks, flowers, etc. I also purchased leftover Christmas tinsel in silver, a banner with birds and snow, etc. In other words, anything I could find in the Clearance section that would serve as a backdrop for my pictures.

Once home, I taped 6 scrapbook sheets together to make one large backdrop – the other items such as the tinsel could be simply hung “as is.” When I got ready to take a picture of my cake, I used tacks to hold up my removable paper backdrop to the cardboard and voila! You’ll see in the pictures I attached that it looks like the cake is sitting in front of a brick wall – no such thing… all paper, ladies and gents! The beauty of this is being able to change the backgrounds easily and cheaply. I am no longer searching for a decent wall – your imagination is the limit.

I’ll improve my “technique” but for now… I’m a much happier camper (or baker!) :)

Hope this helps…

What a fabulous idea DJ! I totally thought that was a brick wall! A nice backdrop really does show off the cake so much more!

Great idea DJ.Good tips. Nice backdrops do enhance your cake pics. This past summer I bought some cheap roller blinds and stiff studio board. Cut the roller off the shades…took some spray paint I had on hand and sprayed 2 of the vinyl sheets. Just created fun design with the paint.I attached them with clothes pegs to the board. I’ve been meaning to go to a discount wallpaper store here in town to get some interesting paper backgrounds…. but still haven’t got around to it!!

Great idea thanks. I’m a firm believer in backdrops as when so much time is spent on a creation, a great backdrop helps it to stand alone without clutter. Once a cake is cut, the photo memory lives on. :)
Thanks once again and it shows you can get quite innovative with it too. :)
