Copyright Character Cakes - a glimmer of hope for options??

Hello Cakers. We all know the copyright brew-haha is not a new issue, it is now as it has always been. But what hasn’t been done (or even attempted!) yet… Is us cakers standing UNITED as a massive collective and asking the big brand owners; WHY there is no option for us to legally make character cakes, which in turn fuels the hype for their brand.

Our product does not last, it does not hang around devaluing a brands image… It is not resold… It is EATEN and gone forever. Yes, we have a pic to keep… But so do the home hobbyist bakers (the ones who are allowed to make Disney cakes as they don’t make any money) and if their cake creations are not brand-damaging… Why are ours? As professionals?

We know licences exist for these brands, but we know the majority of our businesses can’t afford the price tag of the current licences available. So why can’t we have a special cake maker licence? Would you, for example, be willing to pay a reasonable price for the use of 10 Disney character cakes per year? Would Disney like to receive that money that right now they can’t access because such a licence doesn’t exist? How is this not a win-win for all involved??

Fact is – we will never know if all we do is remove our character cake pics from our facebook pages and sit quietly in the background. All we need is a voice – as many followers as we can. There are literally millions of us cakers – all over the world – they can’t ignore us if we are united… Does Disney really want to turn down that much revenue??

  • I have referred to Disney in this blog as an example. This is obviously the biggest fish in the pond. Actually come to think of it… Disney IS the pond! Right?!

I can’t make any promises or know if anything will ever change, but I do know nothing will change if we don’t TRY.

We have started this collective of cakers and the page is here:

This will not put anyone or their business in the firing line – no cake pics allowed – we are united on this page to show the big brands that there are too many of us to ignore. And potentially millions of dollars going begging, because there is no option for us.

Thanks for reading, I really hope to see everyone support the page and support the cause.

11 reads and no comments… Is this a “wouldn’t touch it with a 6 foot pole” issue…?

I’m with you Mardie. Slightly tentative that it might shine a spotlight on me personally, could deter others?… Seems a sensible and practical idea and a win win for all involved. Good luck!

Good luck with the campaign… It is a much discussed subject and bone of contention… It’s just cake after all.. It gets eaten… But I suppose it’s the pics that go on eternally they resent… Silly really as we are all advertising for them…
Good write up, thanks so much

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

A good thought, although risky!
I hope the campaign goes well.

Wishing you lot’s of luck with the campaign!
I completely understand what you are saying, however, I also understand what they are trying to protect…… I would be devastated if someone used one of my cake photo’s to promote themselves or passed off one of my designs or ideas as theirs.
I do feel that these companies take it too far though, with only allowing personal non profit reproductions & only those that can afford the licensing fee, kind of tells me that they’re not really bothered about the reproduction of their product but they want a piece of any money that has been made from it. I TOTALLY agree!! I’m already in the group 😊

it is a difficult issue, I just hope it will really be a win-win deal…

I don´t know how much you charge for your cakes (I know the price is very different in every country). All I can say is that in many countries like mine: Mexico, we can’t charge a high price for the cakes, because people can not afford it.

In developing countries we charge half of the price, (or sometimes even less) you will charge in US, Europe or Australia, for the same cake.

i just hope this will help…and the small cakers can afford pay it.

It is going to be difficult…Would need to reach an agreement that benefits everyone …. and not going to play against small cakers

Good luck! Ü

It would be wonderful to be able to legally get permission to make Cakes of copyrighted images. I would happily pay a reasonable royalty to do so!
