This cake was designed around 1920’s haute couture. The corseted Victorian fashions were making way for more fluid dresses made of silks and organza that were embellished with beads and embroidery. My cake depicts these aspects. The bottom tier is based on a dress that was made of hand printed organza that was then stitched with gold beads. I created this look by pleating thinly rolled sugarpaste that was then hand painted, over piped and lustred. I created sugar strands that I then painted gold and stuck all the way around the hem line in a pattern typical of that period.
The next tier was plainer in look but had pin tuck pleats again typical of the time and embellished with a sugar broach and a sunburst pattern created with some more of the gold sugar beads that were used on the bottom tier.
The next tier was based on the fact that at this time it was fashionable to wear under wear as outerwear. The pink satin chemises were used for inspiration and I also used this tier to depict the fact that in the 1920’s the back of a dress was as important as the front so I cut gumpaste flowers and used these as applique. There was a lot of hand piped embroidery work to create a lace effect. The top tier again shows beading work with the very top clearly representing the cloche style hats worn at this time.
