My contribution to the Dali in Sugar Collaboration
Queen of the Butterflies
The original painting was done in watercolor, gouache in 1951 during Dali’s Expressionism/Surrealism in his Classic period. His reference to butterflies is usually a metaphor for something fleeting, precious and fragile; writing in his autobiography “It is neither surgery nor mutilation nor is it revolution – it is renaissance” (Dali 1986).
Using a watercolor color technique as well as cocoa butter painting, I created a mixed media 3D representation of the painting of sculpted RKT, fondant for the dress, modeling chocolate for the body, wafer paper with corn silk for hair.
