Nightmare
Nightmare Nightmare

So this happened…yes, the cake makers nightmare. How did cake (pictured at home) go from the trunk picture to the final cake picture with what happened in between (see horrifying trunk picture!)…
It was 2pm Saturday, day of 6pm wedding, cake slid over while making a slow left turn (that darn Zoar Rd/Youngblood intersection). I called the mother of the bride and after a short call in which she was much more calm than me, said do whatever to make it tall and sparkly like the bride wanted…she was ok with grocery cake and any solution I had in mind. Venue thankfully was only 15 minutes away, so dumped my 10 yr old who was with me and who heard LOTS of bad words, called her grandma to get her (she had a bday party and present shopping to do), arranged another cake to be picked up from home, went by the Teeter for 2 white cake 8" layers, picked up tons of supplies from home, ripped apart a dummie cake at home, and while working in the venue basement (the Palisades staff was awesome!) right next to their walk-in freezer, in 2 hours, I stacked, filled the 8" new cake with raspberry filling from home, iced all 4 tiers (with the help of 3 display cake tiers) all in two hours. TWO hours. Only 5 of the big bling flowers survived the fall. Had to make 3 more blingy flowers plus 4 smaller flowers while in the basement. Thankfully had more bling wrap on hand. The 8" cake on the second tier gave the couple a tier to cut which using the display I didn’t want them to miss out on that.
Overall, the bottom two tiers were servable for the wedding, so only the 5" (which they were planning to save) and the 7" tier was lost for serving. I purchased a small white sheet cake at the store for them to serve if they needed. Planning on recreating a 5" cake this week for the couple and giving them a full refund. This is the first time in 5 years that I’ve had this happen. Never EVER want this to happen again. Will relook at my doweling (which it was doweled thru the top three tiers), straw supports, maybe use my cake stacker system all the time. Who knows.
I’m thrilled and thankful that the bride and her family were happy with how it all turned out, that’s what’s important!

Well done you.

OH my gosh…what a nightmare!!! I’ve only ever traveled with a doweled 2 tier cake. Never anything bigger. Made 3 tiers, but stacked on arrival. Thank goodness you had time to save the day.

Creativity is God's gift to us. Using our creativity is our gift back to God. Clarky's Cakes 😎

I cannot even imagine. The biggest cake I’ve done was a 3 tier and that was nerve wrecking enough. I always make sure my cakes are nice and cold when I deliver them.

Whew! You definitely saved the day for the bride, but I cannot imagine the stress and pain you went through!!! Great recovery and fast thinking and work!
