The last thing you think about would be sugar shoes for a collaboration such as this, but I love expressing my art through sugar shoes and it brought me great comfort to make these at a very tough time in my life. My father passed during this process and a part of him is in my creation.
My sugar shoes symbolise our earth as it could be if we don’t change our ways – dry, desolate, pale. The sunflowers signify hope – inspired by the fact my father used to plant sunflowers for me and a bunch were given to me when he passed away. Growing up I would marvel at the abundance of butterflies and bees in my parents front yard with these giant sunflowers gloriously standing tall. A quote I read from Albert Einstein has always remained with me that basically says if we have no bees, eventually we would have no humans and no planet earth. So hard to imagine that. The same goes for the dwindling population of butterflies because there is not enough pollen in the world and way too much pollution. A frightening concept, but one we can address if we act now.
