We, at Slice of Sweet Art, were honored to participate in what we consider to be an emotionally powerful collaboration, “Cakes Against Violence” as it truly embodies a universal message of peace, solidarity and anti-violence.

The theme of this collab, was not only a powerful one, but also a very personal one . . . I am a Muslim. I am an American. My religion is being hijacked and vilified by those who chose to use it for their own malicious agendas. Hatred and ignorance fester and grow. I worry about the direction our world is headed. I almost never talk about this, but I’m a New Yorker who personally witnessed and survived the attacks on 9-11. Many others, including a few of my neighbors, friends and co-associates never made it home that day. All these years later, it pains me to know that our world hasn’t been made any safer. Being that I also have family and friends in Paris and Beirut, the sites of consecutive attacks in a 24 hour period, I must say, I wish that no one ever finds themselves wrought with the same fear and anxiety I had, while trying to reach loved ones for a moment, let alone 2 days in a row.

It must be the idealist in me that continues to hope for worldwide love & peace as that is what my contribution to this collaboration is inspired by . . . the thought that through the darkness of these tragedies, we hope for worldwide unity, love and peace. A white lily was used in the design to represent hope, a red rose for love and a white dove for peace. I tried to incorporate as many languages and flags as those that represent my fellow collab members as well as areas of the world that have been affected by violence.
