Made this Avengers cake for the son of my friend and long time client who was having a movie party at the theatre on the day the new Avengers Age of Ultron movie was being released. As always, she left the design totally up to me. I decided to try light up eyes for the first time as I had always wanted some kind of special effects on my cakes and never had an opportunity before to do it so I had planned to use isomalt and these disposable portable LED lights.

Well, day I was to make the eyes, I realized I ran out of isomalt and did not order more so now I was stuck as it was already crunch time. So in a panic, I thought, “let’s just TRY wafer paper…and if not…oh well, no lights…” and guess what? It worked…thankfully! It does not show great in the pic as this was taken in full daylight but it glows quite nicely in a dark setting. I was even able to double them up and make cutouts so that it appears his pupils glow more. A very “happy mistake” I’d say =D

The Iron Man mask is made from a gumpaste/fondant mix and I built it up in some areas to give it a raised 2D effect.
