A special sugar shoe for my niece who is one of the most artistic individuals I know. We are planning to collaborate on a future cake – I decorate and she paints (perfect pairing!). Back to the birthday shoe I created especially for her, which is named Mermaid because until recently she had black, blue and green long hair but has since coloured it all black for work purposes. So to create this all edible shoe I created the mermaids face at the back of the heel and then hand painted her face and body and added multicoloured locks of hair. I loved the idea of making the face in the tradition of Dia De Los Muertos Mexican artwork which somehow fit in with the look I was trying to achieve. The front of the shoe is the beautiful blue tail flipping up to reveal a pearly brooch and shimmering scales. I was so proud of the completed piece particularly because all the details are hand painted and moulded. A fitting tribute for my creative niece. The best part about this she loved it.
