I created this three tier squared cake for the Bonnie Gordon “Because I am a girl” cake competition to help support Plan’s campaign to help girls in Honduras. I found a painter Carin Steen who really inspired me. I loved her use of bright colours and the beautiful faces of the Honduran women she painted. I also loved her use of bold patterns, and bright colours.
I looked into the different things that you can purchase from plan to help out the community, like a chicken, a goat, or a fruit tree. I love the idea of giving them a fruit tree because you know it is something that will continue to give for a long time to come. Also in the spirit of Because I am a girl, I think it is deeply rooted in women to want to grow things, and feed the ones we love. So if we can give a girl a chance to plant a seed, take care of it and see it grow, hopefully she will learn what it feels like to make something and in the process be able to feed her family.
I looked into what kind of fruit grows well in Honduras, pineapple, bananas, mangosteens and then came across the Moringa tree. Also known as the “Giving Tree” and the Miracle tree. You can eat the leaves, the pods, and the flowers which have tons of iron, calcium, protein and vitamins, it is a real super food. It can provide shade over the schools to keep them cool, wood, food and it can even clean the water they drink. This is why I featured a Moringa tree branch and flower in my cake design.
