Well I finally got around to opening the pack of wafer paper that has been lurking in my cupboard for weeks and weeks and using this wonderful tutorial BY Kara’s Couture Cakes I made some ranunculus flowers. Great fun!
The making of the cake itself was less fun though. Now, usually when I am making a cake I never time the baking, I just have a kind of sense of when they will be ready but this time I totally forgot about them and lets say they were in the oven for considerably longer than they should have been! They looked ok though, not burnt at all so, thinking I would get away with it, I popped them into the freezer (I always freeze my cakes, even if it is just overnight). Come decoration day I went to torte the sponges and they were awful, like round bricks!!! :-D
Luckily I had time to re-bake but only had icing sugar, not caster. I had read in Carlos Lischetti’s book that he always bakes with icing sugar so I was confident that there would be no problems. Not sure what went wrong though because the cakes were so dense and puddingy and not at all like my usual. It is safe to say I won’t be using icing sugar for baking again (it is such messy stuff too).
Luckily this cake is for family so I am not stressing too much
Oh, another thing that happened was that as I was making my buttercream my mixer broke!
Happy days! :-D x

Oh my, what a catalogue of disasters. I must admit I love hearing the trials and tribulations of others, know I am not alone in having a bad cake day, of two. However, what a stunning result, I love this cake, so delicate and pretty. I must try that tutorial.

Thank you so much lovely ladies. If any of you do have a go, they are really easy and you don’t actually need two punches. I only had the one inch one and they still came out ok. Oh, and you don’t need the wires either – I just pushed the styro balls onto cocktail sticks and wooden skewers – it’s just so that you have something to hold onto as you make them really :-) xx
