This cake had been in my head for a good few months before I finally got to make it. I was due to exhibit at a wedding fair and I had designed all my display cakes around a fairy tale theme, then when I was asked if I could make a Gothic cake for the October issue of Cake Masters I immediately thought of one of my ideas I was going to use for the show.
Growing up I watched my little video tape of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (1959) almost to death, it was my absolute favourite. Then this year Disney released Maleficent!!! I was a little excited to say the least and went to see it for my birthday, the big kid that I am! I loved the retelling of the story and so my Maleficent cake was born. The bottom two tiers represented the forest and included a gold foliage band to represent Aurora’s headpiece, the top tiers included the feathers for Maleficent’s wings, a textured tier detailed from one of Maleficent’s costumes and finally a sphere surrounded with thorns and a purple and green fantasy flower spray which echoes back to the original character of Maleficent.
I do like to tell a little of a story in some of my cakes and I hope this explains the story behind my Maleficent cake!
