A friend of mine asked me to make a cake for her mother’s 70th birthday. My friend handed me a photo and said her mother was all about her grandkids, to please make each of the grand kids (9 figures in all) and put them on a cake.

When I stopped laughing and settled down a bit, I had to start thinking about how I was going to execute this cake. The only inspiration I had to go on was the photo. No color scheme, no ’mom’s favorites’, theme.

I decided to go with a green buttercream cake. The Grandma is wearing green glasses on her face. I figured if you are wearing green eyeglasses on your face, you must not hate the color green.
I was inspired by green Jasperware.
After much thought, I wanted the cake to be birthday cake, but i wanted it understated and the details minimal so the focus was on the Grandma with her grandchildren.
I am very excited about this cake!

12" vanilla cake, 8" chocolate cake, iced with Avocado tinted buttercream and white buttercream accents. The fondant/gumpaste figures were all hand molded and hand painted. (I had to use a magnifying glass to paint the details on the face with food coloring gels.

Thanks for looking!

OMG! How long did it take to make all the figures?

The figures took between an hour and an hour and a half to make. I had to use a magnifying glass to paint the faces. Thanks for all the nice feed back!
