Nope….your not crazy…..the smaller the cake, more tricky to cover. As you say, less space to work..and fondant does tend to “cave in” more. I find placing cake on a locked turntable helps for me. Just easier when cake is elevated higher.

Next time try raising it up a bit. Place a 3" round cutter (works for me) or something small underneath your cake that will allow the fondant to hang down past your cake board as you smooth it on. Then you can trim the bottom with an exacto knife. The added room will make it easier to smooth without the pleating. : ) Hope that helps!! I’m new to CakesDecor and just jumping right in : )))
