Fondant Parquet cake base

This is how I create my wooden flooring for my cake bases…. I hope it is of some help, and should anyone have any questions please ask away…if anyone makes use of it I would LOVE to see the results (either here or on facebook www.facebook.com/EstreleCakes ) ! Thank you! Sarahx

  • Having covered the board with fondant (2/3 mm thick) remove the excess using a palette knife, following the edge of the cake board.
  • Using a mark the edges of the floor boards then using a wire brush for wood grain in sugar (I don’t recall where I purchased mine, but here is a link to a similar one …) create the wood grain. You will probably have to redefine the edges of the wood after making the wood grain.
  • Depending on what colour you are going for you will vary the colour you use (here I used Antique Silver). Mix it with lemon juice and using a good sized brush paint the the slats between each piece of ‘wood’.
  • Using a piece of Kitchen paper wipe the board, spreading the paint you just painted on. The depending on the look you want you may want to repeat this with a wet piece of kitchen paper.
  • Finally I spray it with varnish and leave it to dry.
