I made this cake for my lovely husbands 30th birthday.
There was a very big chance this cake was not going to make it to the party! I had a nightmare of a job icing it. I seem to be going backwards, which I’m putting down to the sugarpaste. I had one I loved and they changed it, and since then I can’t find a nice one!
Anyhoo, I wrote a blog on it, which a lot of bakers have related to. Here it is :)

Your blog was awesome – I can certainly relate to that – of all the cakes I’ve ever made – most of which turn out fine – my daughter’s engagement cake was my worst nightmare! It was three tiers and for some reason, I couldn’t get them straight – I used every trick I knew to disguise the annoying incline – the Satin Ice I used was full of pock marks and it wouldn’t cover the cake smoothly – the cricut silhouettes I purchased from a very nice cake designer kept tearing when I tried to remove them from the edible paper – so I ended up with a number of beheaded figures – not to mention a handful of broken legs and arms! Finally, while transporting the cake, the weather was so hot that the fondant started to give and the pretty flower I had secured with Royal Icing, fell off and made a hole in the bottom tier… I was so disappointed, but my daughter was a trooper and she said it was lovely – I made sure the cake was served quickly so I wouldn’t have to suffer any more!
So, I totally get it… yours turned out beautiful – congrats!!

The cake turned out beautifully. Thank you so much for sharing the troubles you had with this one. I get very discouraged when things don’t go right and knowing I’m not alone really helps. I see all the beautiful cakes on here that look so flawless and don’t realize that others have trouble too. Great job at disguising the issues!
Hi Funfetti, It’s worse when its for family. You know they’re going to say “oh don’t stress yourself, we don’t mind”, so its all internal pressure about making something to show how much you love them! I’m gutted for you that yours fell apart :( But glad your daughter wasn’t sad. Bet it still tasted yummy :D

Hi Goreti,
I think we’re all the same. I look at everyone elses cakes and think “damn, how do they get that so perfect”. As I said in the blog I get people asking how mine are so perfect, and I know they’re not lol. I hope it helps you not beat yourself up over it :)
