The Courtship
April is Autism support month so before the month closes out I wanted to share this piece I did for Sugar Art For Autism. Is was inspired by the striking painting by Jack Carl Anderson, Song of the Crane (in the photos). I was immediately taken by the Japanese red crowned cranes during their majestic courtship dance. Keeping the Asian feel and colors of the painting, I sculpted a Japanese inspired vase made from RKT, fondant and modeling chocolate then sponge painted creating a stone texture. The bas relief cranes are made from gum paste to depict the romantic dance in winter. The white Kobus magnolias, native to northern Japan, are also made from gum paste.
All the submissions to this collaboration had an inspiration photo, sugar artist creation and fashion sketch by Michael Ryan Andolsek (also in the photos). You can see all the incredible pieces at https://www.facebook.com/SugarArt4Autism.
