Here is my entry for this year’s OSSAS , which I got 4th place for! I drew inspiration from the traditional poem “Something Old, Something New” I incorporated understated modern touches, while keeping an elegantly classic overall vibe. I utilized classic techniques like Oriental stringwork, piped frames, as well as the traditional round white wedding cakes, as my “something old” elements. Lily of the valley are popularly used in traditional weddings, which is why I chose them. For my “something new” elements, I created a technique for an edible plush velvet finish, which I have a tutorial for on my blog for FREE! Other modern elements are super sharp edges, square tiers, a ribbed tile effect, clean lines and a unique horizontal stringwork pattern. Sugar orchids also help add a modern touch and are a perfectly juxtaposed to the delicate and airy lily of the valley. The sugar shoe is made using a technique I “borrowed” from Kerry Vincent, called Vincent Marquetry. The shoe also features a hand-made sixpence coin, with tiny piped details, including an homage to the Queen of Cakes herself and the year that the OSSAS was founded. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to compete in the very last OSSAS. It is truly bittersweet.
