Sorry I haven’t been around much. 😔 A house move AND new job have kept me plenty busy!
I was incredibly honoured to be asked to contribute to this fantastic collaboration of cake and sugar artists, particularly as it is to recognise such a wonderfully talented and hardworking individual.
As a teacher, I despair at some of the ‘role models’ our children are presented with – I am thrilled to be able to support Anya as an example of what young people can achieve when they work hard and refuse to allow anything to prevent them from their dreams.
I took the inspiration for my piece quite literally from the name of our collaboration and looked to the original stargazers – the first animals sent into space. Often mistakenly attributed to the dogs of the 1950s, the original space pioneers were the Albert monkeys, who were sent up back in the 1940s and I am thankful that we live in an age where this would no longer be considered either acceptable or appropriate. By no means a celebration, I wanted to commemorate and memorialise the Alberts’ legacies.
Unfortunately, I did have a bit of a disaster whilst making my piece, but it was really important to me that I did not let Anya down, so I repaired it as best I could. I must also credit the amazingly talented Zoe Fox of Sweet Foxylicious Cakes for teaching me how to structure a freestanding bust cake.
I hope you like Albert and thank you for looking.
