Birdwatching/woodwork tribute

Birdwatching/woodwork tribute

I was asked to make a cake for the wake after my father-in-law’s funeral on Monday and was given free reign on the design. I decided to concentrate on his favourite hobby of birdwatching and the fact that he was an amazing cabinet maker.
For the top tier I drew the birds onto modelling paste, cut them out and left them to dry overnight around the side of a cake dummy and then painted them the following day. I airbrushed the background in blue and green, painted on the branches etc that the birds were sitting on and then stuck the birds on top.
For the bottom tier I cut panels that I used a wood embosser on and placed them around the side of the cake and then painted. Each tier was 7" tall.
It’s my absolute favourite cake to date and hopefully the perfect tribute to a lovely man x

Absolutely stunning, beautiful tribute

I’m in love with this cake, and the story behind it! All the details are so incredibly perfect!

Thank you all. My father-in-law was always incredibly supportive of my work and even made my cake room for me so it was lovely to be able to make this tribute for him x
