Made for one of my besties, for her 30th birthday…she’s a huge theatre fan, and has seen many shows several times. One of her favourites is Wicked, which she’s now seen 43(!) times, and was the natural choice for the theme of her cake.
The design changed over time…I chickened out of my planned Elpheba and Glinda models, but did make my very first shoe (rookie mistakes made; it was a little fragile and the toe shaper got stuck till the cake was cut and the shoe nibbled on).
The bottom tier is a dummy, to give height and to help give the wow factor…I used brandy (no vodka) to water down sugar flair food colours to give the watercolour skyline effect. The derelict hut was made from fondant but the wind wheel was painted. This is based on a scene from the stage show.
The cogs were made with a cutter, and I applied black edible glitter to some of them.
I made the poppies free hand and were far easier than I expected.
Another (mutual) bestie, more arty then me, hand painted the map of Oz on the top tier. My handiwork would not have come close!
The 9 hour drive from Fife in Scotland to London was a little nerve wracking but we made it…just!
Please excuse the shoe supports, it was too fragile to be left free standing until just before the cake was to be cut.
