I created this cake for TACSF cake competition this past Sept. in Orlando, FL. I have always had a love for anything medieval, dragons, knights, etc. I thought this would be a great cake to create and so began this cakes journey:) The scales were created using a snake impression mat and a small egg cookie cutter that I reshaped into a scale. ( imagine cutting out ALL those scales!!!) The chainmail was created using marvelous molds medium chain necklace and then carefully placing side by side until the whole tier was covered. ( this was even more time consuming that the scales. lol) I then painted them silver with Rainbow dust metallic silver paint. I created molds for the King Arthur sword and the isomalt gems. For the heart I carved out a piece of styrofoam till it was just right then covered in fondant. The dragon on the shield was hand painted. The dragon feet were created using fondant and the claws made from pulled sugar. Lastly I used an impression mat for the cobblestone and the dusted them with black petal dust. This cake had many hours put in but was well worth every minute! I received a bronze medal for this piece which was more than I had expected to receive because all the pieces in my division was AMAZING! It was such a fun time and I can’t wait to compete again:)
