This cake was my second trend for American Cake Decorating Magazine January 2016 trend issue. Hand piped royal icing and metallics.

I combined traditional techniques with a modern design aesthetic Incorporating hand piped, royal icing details with a modern, bold color palette and stylized flowers. Royal icing was the medium of choice for wedding cake design for decades…but with the advent of fondant it became a dated and unpopular choice…however brides and cake designers are returning to this almost forgotten technique and breathing new life into classic piping techniques. With a return to traditional cake decorating techniques…I wanted to incorporate the delicacy that royal icing allows into the design….the metallic sheet captures the facets of each hand piped bead and gives the flowers and butterflies dimension. It was time consuming but well worth it. I loved the texture I was able to achieve. I will be using a lot more of this technique in up coming cakes in lots of different ways.
