Bulgarian people profess Christian faith and honor religious icons as its sacred religious objects. Apart from being religious symbols, they are true works of art. Depicting Jesus Christ, Mary, the Holy mother of God, apostles and saints, icons are considered valuable gifts during Christian celebrations.
One of the most famous and revered Christian saints is St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, who was born in the 3rd century AD and died a martyr’s death on October 26, 306 AD. On this date the Bulgarians venerate his memory and all men named after the Saint celebrate.
You can see a scaled-down version of the religious icon of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, author unknown. It is a masterpiece cast in silver, displayed at the church of St. Demetrius’ in the city of Plovdiv. I tried my best to recreate it by using certain techniques of confectionery art. I hope you will like it.
