This is a cake I made a few weeks ago for my sis’ best friend since Gr. 7. It was for her birthday and she is going through a very personal battle so this cake is very symbolic with the gumpaste orchid representing healing and the bud, new life and hope.

I wanted to keep it simple and have the orchid be the star so I kept the details to a minimum. The top tier is cake but detailed to look like a small ceramic planter. I know anatomically, the orchid should have a MUCH longer stem and some broad leaves but I was going for a certain look, not total realism. The top tier was detailed with pieces made from standard silicone molds that were cut to get the shapes I wanted, then dusted lightly with petal dust to give some depth.

Thanks to my good friend Dina for providing pics of her live orchids for me to use in modelling my orchid. I was not happy with my very first attempt that was made without a close up pic, but this one I can at least post without hiding my face!
