I made this cake in celebration of my sister’s 40th Birthday. She isn’t fond of sugarpaste, so requested a buttercream finish – a first for me! She has always loved sunflowers so that seemed an obvious choice, but I had to learn how to make them (huge thanks to Renee at HappyCakesBakes for her YouTube tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaZm42jSuF0). Emily has also always loved purple so I teamed the sunflower with purple freesias, which were our mother’s favourite flower – poignant because Emily and Mummy used to share a birthday, so we were also celebrating for Mummy, who would have been 69.
