I was all set to make a Frozen themed cake for my granddaughter’s 6th birthday with sugarpaste ordered and a picture in my head when I got the phone call……..“Grandma can I have a pirate cake please?” When I said I thought she wanted a Frozen cake and was told “it’s soooo last year!” What could I say?!
Her Mum – being very girly – was horrified and agreed as long as it was pink. My granddaughter wanted blue – “let’s just not tell her Grandma”
I began peace negotiations and we agreed on pink AND blue – well I had to use all that Frozen blue somehow!
Then the instructions started – the cake had to be the pirate ship (I’ve never made a shaped cake and was desperately angling for a cut out or small model), stripes were ordered, the board had to have sea and a beach with a treasure chest, Jake the Neverland pirate had to be “driving”, Madam had to be on the front dressed as a pirate, sails had to be pink and blue with a “pirate head thing” on……..which was when I introduced her to a new concept and word……Grandma’s DISCRETION!
We also made cookies for her to take to school and she designed and drew the pictures herself which we printed onto edible icing – love my printer for things like this.
I hope you enjoy looking at her emails to me and the picture of her with the cake as we sang to her………..apparently I had exercised discretion perfectly and she announced that it was exactly what she wanted.
Chocolate Madeira cake, custard flavoured buttercream, Belgian chocolate ganache.
Phew – can’t wait till she’s 7!
Thanks for looking.
