For a special lady’s birthday, I created her beloved cat in sugar! It is a 3D stretching cat cake, based on the wonderful class taught by Dot Klerck that my friend took, & helped me get the structure correct.
The kitty is built on a plywood base, with threaded rods & thick wires creating the structure. The body is all cake, the head is rice krispy treats, the tail & legs are fondant & gumpaste. He is hand-painted with food color dusts & gels. The scarf he is wearing emulates the one he is wearing in the adorable inspiration picture I was given of the real cat, who is obviously the light of his human’s life!
This cake really challenged me, both from the structural standpoint, but more so from the color standpoint. It is HARD to achieve that orange tabby cat color in edible mediums without it looking too orange or pink. I appreciate the tremendous help I received from several cake artist friends who were so generous to lend their advice!
The cake is Lemon Vanilla Bean cake, with Lemon Meringue buttercream filling, & fondant decor. You can view the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5lJSiR0u0M&list=UUg1pHZJcXE-hfHMoPMzhBiw.
