Anyone for a makeover?

A birthday cake for a girl who just loves cosmetics. The lid of the make up box is hinged, thanks to my lovely other half, who helped me with the construction of this one.

Hi PomPomCakes,
Can I ask you how did you make the top?
Is polystyrene? Or cardboard?
How did you set it off? I think with pegs or long toothpicks, but how did you do to not reduce the thickness or length respect the base of cake?
You cut a little bit to the inside bottom corners resting on the cake?
I don’t know if I explain well my question!
I hope you can help me because I have to make a cake similar to yours, and I don’t know how to fix the problem of cover top … are days that I’m going crazy and I don’t know what to think more!
Thanks in advance for the help but, if you don’t want to confiding the " your secrets", it’s ok just the same … I understand it!… but I hope it is not so … I really need help!
