For many of us this is a tribute to those we have lost, and a celebration of their sweetness. My submission is dedicated to my grandmother who was taken by breast cancer much too soon, and also to my mum.

She is my inspiration, and more amazing, strong and resilient than she will ever know…

My concept was using basic textural elements and patterns from nature, and highlighting the simplicity and architecture involved in their structure through cakes & desserts. By stripping the texture in flora back to its most basic form, it reveals their life giving veins as their paramount element. The veins in hydrangea and their foliage were emphasised throughout the table.

Similarly, heavily featured were the structured simplistic form of succulents. Succulents have been a repeating theme throughout for their symbolism of growth, repair and regeneration. From a single leaf a whole new plant can thrive. They are resilient and strong through the adversity of nature and show beauty through simplicity.

I facilitated repeating simple shapes and patterns found in nature upon the cakes and desserts. Highlighted were pearls, hexagons reminiscent of glistening honeycomb and shiny metallic fishscale which was also reflected in the use of sequins. I wanted to juxtapose natural vs synthetic and highlight stripped back textural elements found in nature and parallel them as manufactured design elements.

On the table are three feature fondant cakes, multiple designs of cupcakes, choc coated oreo’s, a “naked” cake and chocolate mudcake cups. Also- what morning tea is complete without tea…and of course a bottle of sweet bubbles. We picnicked in stunning Mt Lofty on a sweet autumn’s day among the turning leaves.

A special thanks to the one’s I love for making this day so special. My mum Brenda, husband Cully, and special little guy Atticus. Also a big thank you to my amazing photographer Kayla Temple for all her help and for capturing the essence of my concept so beautifully.
