Surprise! Surprise! Polly was invited to join a collaboration between 50 cake artists for Mother’s Day and she nearly fell off her chair! Why, you may ask. First of all, the theme was flowers which is still a pretty much new and uncharted territory for Polly and second, the 50 cake artists include some amazing and talented sugar flower artists from around the world. These reasons are enough to set any “non flower person” screaming and running for the hills! But since Polly didn’t, maybe she is ready to step into the role of a “flower person”? We cannot foresee what the future holds but first… This is the SUPER CAKE MOMS COLLABORATION!

50 cake artists from around the world recently came together to honor a very special group of people… MOTHERS! 50 different flowers on 50 floral cakes!

I chose the Vanda orchid because it is exotic, rare, vibrant and beautiful. Also, I have always wanted to try my hand at making a violet coloured sugar bloom of this orchid species. For my Mother’s Day cake, I made three violet Vanda blooms to adorn the top in a slight cascading arrangement. To compliment the markings of the Vanda’s petals, I piped black royal icing lace work and floating stringwork amidst suspended sugar lace pieces in violet. I chose lime green for the colour of the cake so that the violet of the flower and lace pieces will ‘pop’ against the green background. Lasty, I added wired sugar lace butterflies in black to add height to the design.
