Introduce Yourself

Mira - Mirabella Desserts

Hi everyone, my name is Mira. I don’t know that I have an interesting story to tell about myself but here goes…

My nationality is Egyptian but I was born in Canada after my parents immigrated here in the early 70’s and have lived in the French-speaking province of Quebec my entire life. I have been married for 14 years to my supportive husband Patrick and I have 4 beautiful, active and interesting children – Layla 12, Matthew 10, Gabriel 6 and Noah 4. I am formally trained in accounting and marketing and worked in those fields for several years, but left the “corporate world” 12 years ago when I had my daughter to be a stay-at-home mom.

I started cake decorating like many of you did by making my children’s birthday cakes. Every time I made one, I was told I should open up a bakery and sell cakes professionally. At the time I thought my cakes were cute, but I didn’t think I was good enough to sell them so I resisted the idea for a long time. But a seed was planted and a passion for cake decorating started to grow. I started challenging myself to learn and increase my skills and loved the rewarding feeling of making better and more beautiful cakes. More importantly, I loved my children’s reactions when they would see the cakes I made for them!

After my last son was born in 2010, I started to feel the urge to get back to work and do something for myself after being home for so many years. I felt that getting back into my old career would be very difficult after so long of being out of the job market, but more importantly felt that it would be a bit of a soul-crushing experience to go back to doing something I never really enjoyed. I have always been crafty and enjoyed the creative process of making things, and I wanted to be able to do something more fulfilling and rewarding with the rest of my life. So I took a risk and decided to start Mirabella Desserts about 2 years ago! I took a few basic cake decorating courses locally, but I am essentially self-taught.

It’s been a slow but steady growth, but I have seen my skills and my reputation increase with every order and every cake I make. I love the artistry of cake design, and the fact that there is so much potential for creativity, always a new skill to learn, a new technique to master – it never gets boring and there is so much to aspire to! With my children still being so young, I still struggle to balance my time between making cakes and looking after my kids (and sleeping!), so I am still limited with how much work I can take on and don’t consider myself to be a full-fledged business yet, but hope to grow to that one day.

I have really enjoyed getting to know so many of you wonderful and talented cake decorators either through FB or CakesDecor and hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know me a little better too! Here is a pic of me (looking super tired as usual) with my 4 kiddos on my birthday, with the birthday cake I made for myself this year. :) xx
