Sweet Jepsons

Cool effect. What kind of nail and how did you retrieve it (after cooking/before?) Is that foodsafe? ~ Thank you

When you place them together, do you put a skinny side of the wedge to a fat side or are all the fat sides together and the skinny sides together? Thanks for the info. Lovely cake!

Thanks ladies!

Ahimsa – I used a flower nail (from Wilton) made out of the same material as the pans (flat on top) and when the cake comes out of the pan, it is at the top of my cake. You can easily remove it.

PamsTiersofJoy – Yes, all the fat sides go together on the outside, this makes them turn in the circle you desire. Otherwise you would have gaps and when you cut the cake open, you would not see a perfect heart. I did one before this and did not get them very tight because I had tried it with a flat cake, not the wedge pieces and I had a lot of blobby looking pink spots, not pretty hearts. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for sharing this is awesome :-)

Thank you sooo much for posting this. Some people sell this information.

Thanks FlattCatt…. I have looked at a few tutorials on this but no one ever really said how they cut the pieces and when I tried it flat it just didn’t work. This is just a twist. Also I am a hobby cake maker… not a business so I wouldn’t sell it. My info is all free.. haha

So very cool of you Karen. By the way. Have you every seen the colorful balls inside of a cake? Do you suppose it’s done the same way? somehow?

Please visit me on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/pages/FlattCatt-Cakes-and-Treats/161387517291857?ref=hl

Yes FlattCatt, same technique with the balls except those are not so tightly packed in. There is a great picture tutorial out by the person that maybe even invented this process… the balls are spaced out a bit but that is such a cool effect. That is what got me interested in doing this!! Love this effect! Same person does butterflies inside. The person is “Once Upon a Pedestal” where I got the original information from. She is a great website!!

Karen

Thank you so much Karen!! I want to find this tutorial!!
Thank you again :)

Thank you so much for sharing this! Its so beautiful! Lots of work though… Why do you put a flower nail in though? Didn’t understand that bit.

Hi Raika,

I use the flower nail because the outside edges cook a lot faster than the center “blog” of mix. This way the center can cook faster making the outside edges less dry. I did it both ways, but you have to cook longer to get the center done without the nail.

Karen

Thank you :)

Awesome tutorial – I have one question – the hearts look like they’re placed sideways into the batter, but you say to put them upside down – can you explain this part a little more? Thanks!!!!!

DJ - Fun Fiesta Cakes

Funfetti: If you think about how the heart looks when your cake is right side up and cut open… then the TOP of the heart has to be placed top down, or upside down, into the batter. I think they look sideways because they are thicker on the outside edge than the inside edge. This allows for the tight fit and assures each cut has a perfect heart showing. So, what you have is the pointed edge up before you place your last batter over the top. If you look at the last picture that has the batter over, you can see the pointy edge sticking up. This is the BOTTOM of the hearts. Hope that helps.

Karen

Thank you. You are very generous to share your tutorial with us. I’ve seen tutorials such as this offered for sale on Facebook for $25 each. That’s why I think it was very kind of you to share. Thanks again.

Joy from Joyful Cakes

Awww. you are welcome Joy! Thanks for your kind words.

Karen

Thank you for sharing it with us how you did that.

As you can see from the picture I have added to my reply, do you also think the sponges were used in the same technique? If so, how do you think they have it all layered and also with the white in the elephants eye?

The picture of the safari cake above is mine, and is by no means done by the method of the heart. Having said that, I cannot see that the tutorial on the heart is correct. The hearts are lying on their sides in the demonstration, so if you cut that cake as is shown in the end result, they would not be standing on their points, but lying on their sides. Please correct me if I am wrong, but that is how it appears in the tutorial photographs. Maybe it is the pictures you have, but to me the hearts look like they
are on their sides.

Hi Terry. Your cake is AWESOME and I did not post it… a reader of my tutorial did… and by no means am I anywhere near your talent! My hearts are placed in the batter upside down, not on their sides, and I apologize for the blurry pictures. But indeed when cut the cake is exactly as pictured with the hearts right side up.

Karen

Thank you Karen…only just saw your note now. I did not mind the posting of my picture at all…Your cake is really pretty, but I can’t make the picture out. If you placed the cake hearts upside down, would the points that are currently touching the nail, not be pointing skyward??…You know how you did it, and as I say it is lovely, just confusing pictures maybe….

I can see the points of the hearts are facing up to the top of the pan…I can’t wait to try this, thanks for sharing :) xx
