Funfetti: If you think about how the heart looks when your cake is right side up and cut open… then the TOP of the heart has to be placed top down, or upside down, into the batter. I think they look sideways because they are thicker on the outside edge than the inside edge. This allows for the tight fit and assures each cut has a perfect heart showing. So, what you have is the pointed edge up before you place your last batter over the top. If you look at the last picture that has the batter over, you can see the pointy edge sticking up. This is the BOTTOM of the hearts. Hope that helps.
