I always think it’s best to start small, making birthday cakes gives you the chance to practise the smaller details which help build up much more impressive wedding cakes. I started small, and, I am so glad I did, you’ll be surprised at just how much you can learn from the little things.
Also, cake isn’t always about the design, the taste is just as important.
One word of advice, never agree to do a certain design if you have never done anything like it before, all cake decorators have their strengths and weaknesses, some are amazing at sculpting, some are amazing at piping, sometimes you just can’t do it all. Remember to practice bigger things before you agree to do them.
