It is very important to take the measurement correctly so that you know how high the heel needs to be. I have been able to do it without a kit and you are right the heel is the hardest. On one of them I made the heel slightly shorter than it needed to be. When I put it together, I simply added some gumpaste to the bottom of the sole to give it the extra height I needed. I then wrapped some fondant around the entire heel so that you could not see the additional piece. It looked like it was just one piece. Hope that makes sense.
