Hand Painting

I remember being utterly terrified the first time I painted a cake! I’d been asked for an animal print cake and the customer had sent me an image that was clearly painted! Luckily for me my friend Liz (time for tiffin) had done one so she talked me through what I needed to do. I remember procrastinating for AGES before daring to put the paint on the cake and the moment I did I was suddenly calm and relaxed..I discovered that I LOVED painting on cakes!

Here’s the first cake… (Two years ago!)

My confidence grew from there and now I’m delighted if I’m asked to paint a cake! I’m not a fine artist by any stretch if the imagination but I’ve watched YouTube tutorials and read blogs aimed at (non cake!) artists.

Having some good paint brushes really help, slowly building my stock of sable brushes up. I like to have a variety but find the smaller brushes and the fan tails brushes are my most used.

I usually water down my paints with vodka but have just bought my first cocoa butter pot so am looking forward to having chance to play with them.

I really enjoyed painting this floral cake

Recently I have been experimenting with painting on royal icing, I LOVE this as it allows me to add more texture. Just as with fondant I leave the RI to dry completely before starting to paint.

Thanks for reading, I hope if you haven’t hand painted cakes yet you’ll be inspired to try, it really is great fun!
