Maori Tattoo monochrome, cake painting

Tools you will need.

Draw your template on parchment paper.

Prepare a plate made of modeling chocolate or fondant, as you prefer. Lay the template on the plate and follow each line with a toothpick in order to affect slightly your modeling chocolate or fondant. I used black gel edible colour thinned down with vodka for painting.

I made a couple of grey and balck roses, using the remaining modeling chocolate. Free hand made petals: put a small ball of modeling chocholate between two pieces of cling film and press slightly until flat.

I have tried to make roses in the same way before, because I don’t have any cutters.. But it has not worked for me.. Is there a certain pattern I should lay the petals in?

Love the cake design. A great idea for a quick cake.

Very clear and helpful tutorial Kate.

Fantastic, thanks so much for sharing x

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

Hi Nijo, for a simple cake like this one, personally, I prefer roses without cutters, they are all different and therefore look also natural. First step: make a little cone for the centre. For the petals: make a small ball (big like a finger nail) and put it between two lyers of cling film, press it lightly with your fingers until it looks like a real petal. Make several petals and stick them round the cone, bigger petals for the external part. Sorry Nijo, my english is probably not that good but I really hope this helps you. Please do not hesitate to ask for more info, I will be happy to help you, if I am able to :-) ! Happy caking ;-)
