For this cake, I decided that I wanted to get away from sugar paste. So, I opted to be creative from start to finish. The cake was a Buttermilk and Vanilla Bean Sponge, layered with Vanilla Buttercream Merengue Icing and Caramelized Walnuts (not entirely my own recipe, even if I wished it was, as although it involved a lot of different processes, it turned out to be really really delicious).
The designed was spatula painted onto the soft Buttercream Merengue Icing.
Both the recipe of the cake, the covering icing and the techniques were all used for the very first time.
I loved the spatula effect, as it kind of gave a certain dimension to the design. After the first couple of tries, I actually found the technique quite easy and effective.

Really nice, it is so different to the cakes you normally make! I think you managed to make a great looking cake – especially if you consider it was your first attempt at the technique :)
Nice colors. Sounds an interesting ingredient combination too. :D
