This is my participation in the wonderful collaboration “Odyssey the search for Ulysses”, hosted by Catia Guida ❤
My choice is SEVENTEENTH SONG - TELEMACH RETURNS TO ITHACA
The moment I have chosen is when Odysseus returns to Ithaca after twenty years. He looked like a beggar and no one could recognize him except his dog. It lay chained and no one cared about it anymore. They all thought that Odysseus would not return and did not want to deal with the old animal. But Argos recognized his master. Seeing him, it happily waved its tail with its last strength. The dog fulfilled its mission to wait for its master, then collapsed and died of old age. Argos' loyalty moved the strong man to tears.
This scene is one of the earliest examples of the loyalty a dog can have to a human.
A source of my inspiration is a Lawrence McDonald sculpture "Ulysses Recognized by His Dog". The sculpture is exhibited in Paris in 1855.
