Jumped at the chance to work on a new design for the Peranakan Kebaya series of cakes. This one a commission by a loving hubby for his wife’s Peranakan-themed 40th Birthday celebration. Design adapted from her own lovely kebaya and kerongsang set. Raspberry lemon cake with white chocolate ganache inside.

Peranakan or Straits Chinese are descendents of early chinese settlers in Southeast Asia. While they kept many traditional chinese traditions, the peranakan communities also assimilated the local customs and lifestyles, resulting in a unique blend of language, customs and traditions. One of the most well-known is the ladies mode of dress, the nyonya kebaya.
Details include the nyonya kerawang or “cut-work” embroidery, with cherry blossoms (royal icing brush embroidery) and foliage; _kerongsang _(brooches) in gold and jewels, and cake base reminiscent of the famed manek-slippers, hand- beaded by Peranakan craftsmen.
