Once upon a time there was a child who loved to spend his time drawing and sitting in the kitchen with his grandma and mum, mixing every kind of ingredients to bake sweet treats, sometimes delicious, sometimes as hard as rocks. The child grew up whilst spending hours and hours creating his own treats and art and when he was old enough left his home to study art whilst working at pastry shops. One day he was hiking around the mountains and discovered a fairy crying under a willow tree, he approached the fairy and asked her why was she crying. The fairy told him that what made her happiest was to fly, but she couldn’t fly anymore as she had gained too much weight eating too much cake. He felt so responsible as a baker, so he built her a swing. As the fairy was swinging, she started to smile full of happiness, the willow leaves shook and even the tree came to life. Then she gave him the gift of the chocolate magic.
This “Chocolate Magic” has been the first of Daniel’s solo exhibition of edible sculpture. For this private view he has prepared a display with drawings, five of his display pieces and a huge life-size sculpture of the willow fairy swinging that has been shared with the public at the exhibition. This piece had a 230×210×150 cm dimension and weighed more than 200 kg of cake, ganache and chocolate over a structure. The exhibition display and main piece production took 5 days to complete with the help of Maria Filgueira as production assistant. This has been sponsored by Callebaut and Magic Colours products.
Though this has been the first of the “Chocolate Magic” series, this has been a secret until now. Nowadays the “Chocolate Magic” has taken place at Cake International Birmingham Show November 2016 with Aneesh Popat as guest chocolatier, Cake International Birmingham Spring Show with the guest artist Calli Hopper, International Cake Show Australia as a 4 h live sculpting show and Cake & Bake Germany as a 6 h live sculpting. The next “Chocolate Magic” will take place at the November Cake International show at Birmingham with Karen Portaleo as guest artist. Daniel and Karen will be creating the most epic display live at the show.
